Why Can’t This Be Love?

6 September 2007

The Van Halen’s song describe my feeling perfectly :-) Why can’t this be love?

Oh
here it comes
that funny feeling again

Winding me up inside
every time we touch.
Hey
I don’t know
oh
tell me where to begin

‘Cause I never ever felt so much.
And I can’t recall any love at all

oh baby
this blows them all away.

It’s got what it takes
so tell me why can’t this be love?
Straight from my heart
oh
tell me why can’t this be love?

Why Me?

10 July 2007

Arthur Ashe, the legendary Wimbledon player was dying of AIDS which he got due to infected blood he received during a heart surgery in 1983. From world over, he received letters from his fans, one of which conveyed: “Why does GOD have to select you for such a bad disease”?

To this Arthur Ashe replied: “The world over — 50 million children start playing tennis, 5 million learn to play tennis, 500,000 learn professional tennis, 50,000 come to the circuit, 5000 reach the grandslam, 50 reach Wimbledon, 4 to semi final, and 2 to the finals. When I was holding a cup I never asked GOD “Why me?”.
And today in pain I should not be asking GOD “Why me?”

Rock of Ages: Hymns With a Modern Touch

9 April 2007

Some popular hymns have been sung so often that they can lose their vitality. “Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee,” “I Surrender All,” and “Rock of Ages” might fall into that category. Thanks to Amy Grant and Vince Gill for their great arrangements on this album. This is an enjoyable CD which takes some old hymns and gives them a modern touch. For the most part, the update is a country sound.

Amy Grant Rock of Ages

Actually before “Rock of Ages”, Amy has released another album of hymns: Legacy…Hymns & Faith which was released in 2002. According to her, “Rock of Ages” is a little more developed musically” and has bolder production. They spent more time on it, making it less sparse than Legacy. The result is a more polished recording. That’s evident right from the start with the opening “Anywhere With Jesus.” It doesn’t just dabble with the blues; it dives in making it a full-sounding blues number.

The album contains 13 songs (please see the list below). Among them “Sweet Will of God” and “O’ Master Let Me Walk With Me” are my favourites. “Sweet Will of God” opens with a youthful-sounding Amy leading a choir of female a cappella voices on a 1986 recording. It comes from a tape of hymns that she recorded as a Christmas gift for her mom and dad. “O’ Master Let Me Walk With Me” features a pennywhistle and accordion, giving it a Celtic flavor.

“Abide with Me” was a bit of a disappointment for me personally. Although it sound fresh on this recording, I would enjoyed listening the original one. (”Abide with Me” was taken from one of Henry F Doanne’s poetry, while its music was arranged by Henry F Lyte).

The recording ends with a blues version of “O Love That Will Not Let Me Go.” This is the much-loved hymn written by George Matheson, the blind Scottish preacher. Aside from the blues arrangement, what makes this version even more unique is a couple of sax solos by Jim Horn. One of them takes the song to its end.

For those who enjoy a modern twist on old hymns, this is a worthwhile collection.

Here are all the album’s tracks:

Born Before 1986

9 April 2007

For those who were born before 1986 :-)

According to today’s regulators and bureaucrats, those of us who were kids in the 60s, 70s and early 80s probably shouldn’t have survived, because our baby cots were covered with brightly coloured Lead-based paint which was promptly chewed and licked. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, or latches on doors or cabinets and it was fine to play with pans.

When we rode our bikes, we wore no helmets, just flip-flops and fluorescent spokey dokeys on our wheels. As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or airbags and riding in the passenger seat was a treat. We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle and it tasted the same. We ate chips, bread and butter pudding and drank fizzy juice with sugar in it, but we were never overweight because we were always outside
playing. We shared one drink with four friends, from one bottle or can, and no-one actually died from this. We would spend hours building go-carts out of scraps and then went top speed down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes.

After running into stinging nettles a few times, we learned to solve the problem. We would leave home in the morning and could play all day, as long as we were back before it got dark. No one was able to reach us and no one minded.

We did not have Playstations or X-Boxes, no video games at all. No 99 channels on TV, no videotape movies, no surround sound, no mobile phones, no personal computers, no DVDs, no Internet chatrooms. We had friends - we went outside and found them. We played elastics and rounders, and sometimes that ball really hurt. We fell out of trees, got cut, and broke bones but there were no law suits. We played knock-the-door-run-away and were actually afraid of the owners catching us. We walked to friends homes. We also, believe it or not, WALKED to school & we didn’t rely on mummy or daddy to drive us to school, which was just round the corner. We made up games with sticks and tennis balls.

Mengeluh

29 March 2007

“Anak buah gue memang bego, disuruh apa-apa salah melulu”.

Satu Hari Setelah Sidang

9 January 2007

Akhirnya, plong sudah. Rasanya beban ini jadi lebih ringan. Tidur pun jadi lebih nyenyak. Terima kasih Tuhan.

Sebenarnya tugas kampus bukanlah alasan.

Ah dukungan doa Anda sangat saya harapkan.

Terima kasih dan salam,
Saya
